WASHINGTON: The Pentagon on Thursday awarded Raytheon Missiles and Defense a contract worth up to $3.2 billion for hardware production and maintenance of all four variants of the Spy-6 radar to be delivered to 31 Navy ships over the next five years .

"There is no other radar with the maritime capabilities of the Spy-6," Wes Kramer, president of Raytheon Missiles and Defense, said in a statement today. "SPY-6 is the most advanced naval radar in existence, and it will provide our military with a major breakthrough in capabilities for decades to come." The SPY-6 radar is an integral part of the ships' ballistic air and missile defense capabilities. The company has completed installation of the radar on the first Flight 3 destroyer, the Jack H. Lucas (DDG-125), which is scheduled to enter service in 2024, the company said in a statement.
