Inside Sig Sauer's Entry For The Army's M4 Replacement

It is worth noting that the Army chose Vortex optics for their rifles before they even knew which rifle they were going to buy. In addition to SIG Sauer, General Dynamics and AAI Textron competed for the contract to build state-of-the-art rifles for the Army.

The initial contract delivery order value is $20.4 million for weapons and ammunition that will undergo testing. The contract includes accessories, spare parts and contractor support. It also allows other DoD services and potentially foreign military selling countries to purchase the NGSW weapon.

The XM5 rifle will replace the M4/M4A1 carbine within the melee force, and the XM250 assault rifle is the planned replacement for the M249 squad automatic weapon.

“Both weapons provide significant capability improvements in accuracy, range, and overall lethality. They are lightweight, fire more lethal rounds, attenuate recoil, improve barrel performance, and include integrated muzzle sound and flash reduction,” the Army said.

Both weapons fire regular 6.8mm ammo, which includes various types of tactical and training rounds that increase accuracy and are more lethal against new threats than 5.56mm and 7.62mm ammo.

The XM157 fire control to be supplied by Vortex integrates a number of advanced technologies including variable magnification optics (1X8), backup engraved reticle, laser rangefinder, ballistics calculator, atmospheric sensor package, compass, wireless intra-soldier , visible and infrared lasers and a digital display overlay.

A military nonprofit hopes to raise about $20,000 by auctioning the civilian version of the Army's next-generation squad weapon next week during the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference in Tampa, Florida. Twenty grand might seem like a lot - especially considering the retail price is listed at $7,999 - but that's not an unheard of asking price for a Sig Sauer MCX Spear if you can find it in stock. Additionally, the rifle will be sold as a kit that includes other military equipment such as the TANGO6T scope and Sig SLX Suppressor, which together cost around $3,000.

The New Hampshire weapons manufacturer donated the rifle package to the Task Force Dagger Foundation, a Florida-based charity with a stated mission to support Special Operations members and their families, along with a host of companies that donate. items such as weapons, blades, and other equipment. In total, the organization hopes to raise over $60,000 during the silent auction and raffle. Todd Kelsey, a spokesperson for the foundation, called it "one of our top fundraisers every year". Bidding for the Sig MCX-Spear kit starts at $8,400 and the event ends on May 17th at 8pm. Eastern Time.

The Sig MCX Spear is in many ways like the NGSW rifle, which is heralded as the latest and greatest in firearms technology. The most notable difference between the two is that the civilian variant - at least the one up for auction - is reserved for 6.8 Creedmoor rather than Sig's .277 Fury cartridge. However, it is a multi-caliber gun, so you may want to change the barrel to recalibrate. Additionally, the MCX Spear features piston-less side loading handles, six-position frame, dual controls, a matching trigger, adjustable gas piston, and M-LOK and Picatinny accessory mounting systems.

Sig introduced the civilian Javelin in January, before the Army officially selected its designs to replace the M4 carbine and M249 machine gun. The XM5 and XM250 – the MXC Spear and Sig-LMG, respectively – were selected after 27 months of military testing. Compared to older weapon systems, Sig designs were made to be lightweight, fire a round at very high velocity, and be suppressor ready. The Army announced the $20.4 million award in April and is expected to field the weapon systems this summer.

Designed by SIG Sauer for the 2022 next generation weapons program to replace the M4 carbine. The XM5 features a heavy-duty, free-floating M-LOK handguard for direct attachment of accessories to "negative space" (hollow hole) mounting points.

In January 2019, the United States military launched the Next Generation Squadron Weapons Program to find replacements for the M4 Carbine and M249 Light Machine Gun. In September 2019, SIG Sauer presented its projects.

The XM5 was designed to fire the 6.8×51 mm (0.277 in) SIG Fury 7.62×51 mm NATO cartridge.

The ballistics of the .277 Fury indicate that it is most likely a fully-fed cartridge, as it has greater pressure, velocity and energy in the chamber.
