The XM157 is the name of the anti-fire system, a separate contract awarded to Vortex earlier this year to supply the integrated optics used on the XM5 and XM250.
The 6.8x51mm is a common cartridge used by both the XM5 and XM250. The first items will be general-purpose, blank, drill/drumless ammunition, small training cartridges and high-pressure test cartridges that allow the Army to use existing ranges.
$4.5 million - If all options are exercised by Sig Sauer for the next 10 years to manufacture and deliver the XM5 Next Generation Squad Rifle, XM250 NGSW automatic rifle and 6.8 caliber regular cartridge series ammunition, including accessories, parts and contractor support.

In other words, the XM250 light machine gun holds 200 fewer rounds than the M249 SAW and gains 3.6 pounds. Although the XM250 is lighter overall, the cartridge is heavier, and the new optics add 2.6 pounds to the system.

The U.S. Army has announced that it has selected SIG SAUER to supply SPEAR and light machine guns for its new XM5 rifle and XM250 assault rifle under a new business agreement. Both fire the 6.8*51mm hybrid cartridge, which has a steel tip and brass case, and fire government-supplied projectiles. This cartridge offers the same performance as the .270 Win Short Mag. The 6.8 caliber regular cartridge series of ammunition is manufactured by Winchester at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant.

The path to selecting the NGSW system began about five years ago with a brief search for an interim combat service rifle in 7.62 NATO, which quickly evolved into a search for a 6.8mm weapon to replace the 5.56 NATO M4 Carbine and M249 squad automatic. Close combat formations include infantry, cavalry, and engineer units.
The US Special Operations Command and the US Marine Corps are overseeing the program. It will be interesting to see how this affects the Creedmoor-based SOCOM 6.5 plan. As for the Navy, it is said that they will switch from the H&K production 416 rifle to the Cattle group if only designated as the M27.
Another system the Army is considering for the NGSW is from True Velocity, which offers polymer ammo with this cartridge and automatic rifle. If the rumors I mentioned are true, this is great news for the Navy SEALs.
Between these two options, many in the industry consider the SIG to be low-risk and the "easy button" because the ammunition technology is so simple that it can be manufactured using existing machines. Additionally, current military personnel using the M4 and M249 appear familiar with these weapons due to similar controls and ergonomics. Finally, SIG has secured several military contracts for ammunition, optics and weapons, including model pistol systems.
