Spy-6 Radar Raytheon - Raytheon wins prime contract for SPY-6 radar, valued at $3.2B.
WASHINGTON: The Pentagon on Thursday awarded Raytheon Missiles & Defense a $3.2 billion contract to manufacture and maintain the four types of SPY-6 radars to be delivered to 31 Navy ships over the next five years.

"No other radar has the maritime capabilities of the SPY-6," Wes Kremer, president of Raytheon Missiles & Defense, said in a statement today. "The SPY-6 is the most advanced maritime radar is available, and will significantly improve our military's capabilities for decades to come." The contract awarded Thursday was for $651 million and includes options worth up to an additional $2.5 billion.

The SPY-6 radar is an integral part of the air and missile defense capability. The four types differ in design and equipment, but, in general, they are designed to protect against ballistic and cruise missiles as well as electronic warfare attacks by destroyers, attack ships, carriers aircraft and guided missile ships.
The company also completed the installation of radar on board the first Flight III, Jack H. Lucas (DDG-125), which is expected to be operational in 2024, according to the company statement.
Defense Intelligence reported earlier this year that Raytheon signed a $237 million contract in December with the Navy that established the procurement and supply services necessary for the company to begin piloting the Navy's Aviation IIA sent back by the SPY-6 radar.
